SUDDENLY SKIPPER ©
I have spent a number of years teaching
boating safety courses, both as a volunteer instructor for the United States
Power Squadrons, then professionally for Boatwise, Inc., a boating education
organization. I came to realize that there is a significant gap in the courses
available to the public. There has been no educational program that addresses
the practical needs of the “normally passenger” who, in the event of the
skipper’s incapacitation, becomes responsible for the safety of those aboard, of
the vessel, and of other boaters in the vicinity.
To satisfy this need, I have developed a
course I call “Suddenly Skipper.”
This course has the following objectives:
·
Primary Objective - Get you and your boat
home safely if the “Skipper” cannot
·
Give you more confidence on the water
·
Make your boating experience more enjoyable
This course is being offered to yacht clubs and other boating
organizations, and will also be given through public offerings. It can be
conducted over two evenings or one day. Course materials will be furnished.
Topics covered include:
·
Deciding whether to stay and wait for help or to take command and go home
·
Anchoring – how to stay put to wait for help
·
Getting help – communicating with the
authorities
·
Finding out where you are – so you can let
the helpers know
·
Basic boat handling – if you really need to
get back
·
Handling serious emergencies
